6. A man is accepted into a church for what he believes and he is turned out for what he knows. – Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain)

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. – Richard Dawkins

If God is seen as a self in a world of his own, an ego that relates to a thought, a cause separate from its effect. he becomes a being, not Being itself. An omnipotent, all‐knowing tyrant is not so different from earthly dictators who make everything and everybody mere cogs in the machine which they controlled. Great to include Karl Marx there. How about some good quotes from Mao, Stalin, and others? Thanks to the ideas of these three and others of similar view, the Atheist faith has proven to be more deadly, closed-minded, and destructive than any other faith.

p.s. Frank Lloyd Wright was theistic, and quite devout.

Wait, you just called atheists closed minded?? Really? Not Christians, Jews or Muslims but Atheists?? That is about as funny and ironic statement I have ever heard from you.

So with thousands of pages of history, science and evidence that the Earth was not created as the Bible states, you still think its 10k years old and started off with 2 naked people in a garden no one can find?? You still believe that Noah lived on an Ark, because the entire planet was covered with water, and he later took the komodo dragon back to Indonesia, the Kangaroos back to Australia, the Penguins back to the south pole, the Polar Bears back to Antarctica, and the Bison back to N. America?? Or can the Kangaroos swim?? Wow, then Noah was the first to discover America?? Wow?

Do you really want to go there??

Here's a list of people who weren't Atheists:
98% of the US prison population
Adolf Hitler
Osama Bin Laden
Jim Jones
David Koresh
Agusto Pinochet
Pope Alexander IV
Saddam Hussein
Hernan Cortez
Oliver Cromwell
Sultan Abdul Hamid II
Baruch Goldstein
Al Capone
Charles Whitman
Eric Rudolph
Mitchell Johnson
Andrew Golden
Slobodan Milosevic
Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson
IRA and UVF
Al-Qaeda
Hammas
KKK
Hezbollah

Should I go on?

Not to mention both crusades and the inquisition which were both sanctioned by the church.

And here's why they did it:

"Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother."
– Isaiah, 9.19

"But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me."
– Luke 19.27

"Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel." -Deuteronomy 17:12

"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." Leviticus 20:13

"Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the Lord alone, shall be doomed"- Exodus 22:19

"They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman." -2 Chronicles 15:12-13

"Cursed be he who does the Lords work remissly, cursed he who holds back his sword from blood." -Jeremiah 48:10

Again, I could go on....

The death tolls of them don't add up to the toll great Atheist fauthful like Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao, Breznhev, Lenin, etc etc etc.

The atheist faith is far from a perfect religion, and its faithful are as capable of arrogance and atrocity as adherants of other religions.

Toad734 said...

Lets not forget that the people you were talking about weren't motivated by their religion or their religious beliefs as all the ones I have mentioned were. Pol pot didn't kill people because they weren't Atheists, he happened to be an Atheist and killed his political opponents of which some were and some weren't also Atheists. It wasn't in the name of their lack of theistic belief that they justified these atrocities. Same with Stalin and everyone else you mentioned.
Sure, maybe Pinochet didn't justify what he did based on his religious beliefs but Pope Alexander IV, Jim Jones, Cortez, Bin Laden, Eric Rudolph and even George Bush most certainly did.
If you can find me 2 murderers or tyrants that committed atrocities in the name of Atheism or because they were an Atheist or because the people they were killing weren't atheists, I would be shocked.

So thats the end of your list, I can keep adding to mine if you want and since Hitler and Stalin were about even in their body counts, no sane person can say that Atheists are responsible for more deaths that Monotheists.

So, you can add the Holy Roman Empire, the Witch trials of Salem,
the Colonization of all of the Americas of which, the South American part was condoned and ordered by the Church. Lets put Sudan on that list along with the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, Thirty year war, Knights Templar, Kosovo, etc.

First off, how many people was Lenin directly responsible for killing?? He had assassination attempts on him and a civil war that he responded to but there were atrocities on both sides.

I also remember him fighting against anti-semitism, guaranteeing womens rights and the right for them to divorce, decriminalizing homosexuality, providing electrical service, literacy and health care for the peasants in the country side, etc. Stuff no religious leader has ever advocated with maybe the exception of MLK.

Excellent list. I could probably nitpick examples of people who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground in the list, but the preponderance is wisdom.

Why so many quotes from others? Are you looking for evidence to quell the doubt within you?

Actually, all religion aside, the theory of intelligent design makes a whole lot more sense than the theory of evolution. You have evidence of intelligent design all around you. Cars and televisions and computers don't just appear - they are designed and created by an intelligent being. You can't just throw a bunch of wires and screws and plastic in a pile and expect that in 500 million years somehow a car will appear.

Maybe the intelligent being was some extraterrestrial race that colonized our planet or maybe it was God or Allah or whatever. But using your theories on why the biblical stories can't be true... If all life on earth just crawled out of a primordial soup, why are their mammals AND reptiles AND fish AND birds? Why do both mammals and reptiles and fish and birds have eyes and brains and bones and hearts? Did the creatures crawl out two by two, male and female, so they could reproduce and not be immediately extinct when the first generation died?

And why all the Christian bashing? Your failure to equally oppose Islam makes one wonder as I originally posited whether there is some unanswered rumbling in your heart that you are fighting with all your muster.

Good luck with that.

Toad734 said...

No, don't need any evidence, all good on my own, its just that sometimes someone else has already said it better...you know, like the lords prayer or something.

Islam is just as retarded as christianity and almost as retarded as Judaism. Same stories, same God, different religion, same bullshit.

Intelligent design actually makes no sense. For one, nothing has been designed intelligently. Rabbits eat their own poop, humans have hemorrhoids, wisdom teeth, appendixes,etc... all shit we don't need and only slows us down. There is nothing intelligent about any of that. Not to mention cancer and other diseases. We are proof that there was no intelligence involved and that we are an imperfect being that just happened to make it in a very forgivable world.

The reason there are males and females is because the species that did have a male and female were able to multiply faster than the ones who didn't have a male and female and therefore, now dominate the planet. Its evolution and natural selection in its simplest form. If intelligent design is real then what intelligence was behind the DOdo bird?? Was that your god?? If so, he was a fucking idiot. A bird that cant fly or swim...ya theres an intelligent idea! If that is your god then he is an idiot and doesn't deserve to be worshiped.

theresa said...

Wrong!

You didn't answer my questions - because there are no answers. Rather, no one alive today knows the answers.

So you have chosen a "safe" argument. One you can't possibly "lose" because no one can "prove" you wrong. But you haven't "proven" you are right either.

Insisting that one theory among many is "the" correct theory is intelletually devoid. An intelligent creator wouldn't have to be perfect. And if we were created physiologically perfect, you could still get hemorrhoids by eating nothing but cheese and chocolate. But that is user error - not a design flaw.

I'm not trying to "prove" you wrong (I have the sense to know that's impossible.) - just pointing out that you can rant and rave all you want, drop the f-bomb like a scorned adolescent, but you haven't "proven" anything by doing so (other than your own closed mindedness).

BB-Idaho said...

Intelligent Design? Monty Python's
caricature of the familiar Anglican Hymn sort of addresses that:
"All things dull and ugly
all creatures sort and squat
all things rude and nasty
the Lord God made the lot."
..as does biological science..

Toad734 said...

I said "NO", I don't need to quell the doubt but apparently you do. Its ok to question it, you are a better person to do so.

By the way, you know what wasn't intelligently designed?? A snow flake. With all its complexity and beauty, it wasn't designed by anything, it just happened. So yes, complex structures can just form without a creator. Sure, you can look at a car or a piece of art and know it was designed but using the same logic I would come to the same conclusion after looking at a snow flake.

Heres another great quote that isn't one here:

"Imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, 'This is an interesting world I find myself in, an interesting hole I find myself in, fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it."

Not to talk about conditions of the ass too much but you are wrong, hemorrhoids, it is believed, are a result of humans walking upright. 4 legged animals don't get them, fish don't get them. If we were designed to walk upright, why would we have these side effects? Also, other animals are able to eat their meat raw...Why not us? That doesn't make any sense. You could argue that we aren't naturally supposed to eat meat or milk...from another animal...post infancy but I guess I am getting side tracked. But yet, the reason our brains evolved and homosapiens ended up being such a successful species is that our ancestors started eating mean, which has protein, which is brain food and therefor our brains evolved...we didn't start out that way, we evolved that way.

And actually, the consensus does say that a god or our "designer" is perfect. Ask any Christian, Jew or Muslim and he will tell you exactly that. And if there is a designer, who designed him? Your logic falls apart; that's how I know there doesn't have to be a designer because your logic states that everything has a designer, that would then have to apply to our "designer". Especially since our designer is so great and perfect and had the power to design and create us, he must have been designed by an even more perfect designer and so on...So you see, intelligent design makes 0 sense.

Intelligent design can't account for millions of years of fossil records clearly showing that species change and mutate and evolve. If they were so perfect (which some may be such as sharks and crocodiles which are found all over the world and have changed little over the last 100 million years or so) then why this change? Why did Ambulocetus stop walking on land and become a whale? Why do whales still have leg bones? These internal leg bones? There is no intelligence in that design whatsoever as they serve no purpose, much like our appendix.

I don't have proof there is no god but I have strong evidence to show how the Bible and other religious books and thus religions, are wrong and their explanation and history of the world is completely wrong. And thus, here are all my quotes about religion, not whether or not there is or isn't an all powerful, jealous, vengeful, sexist, racist, sky god who apparently either evolved himself or just appeared out of thin air to create us, tell us to follow him without ever leaving a trace of evidence as to his existence.

And the point of all these quotables (most of whom aren't exactly known for their - ahem - exegetical prowess)...?

TOAD it seems a bit weak to base your anti-religion self-satisfaction on so many Anonymous voices & random thoughts of those who've never seriously approached the notion of faith or religion.

If I thought you were serious about actually examining & disproving faith/religion (esp. Christianity) instead of simply demeaning, degrading & condemning it, I'd suggest you study people like Thomas Merton, St. Augustine, C.S. Lewis & other scholars of their caliber.

In the absence of that kind of serious contemplation (which these quotes portend), posts like this are a splendid example of DMarks identified in his comment:
Atheist faith has proven to be more deadly, closed-minded, and destructive than any other faith.

After your drive-by comment @ my blog, another commenter said, "Man, what an angry dude."
Sadly for you, I completely agree.

Toad734 said...

I don't base my views on what these people say...Due to my beliefs, I found many of these quotes interesting and I agree with most of them and thought that many of these are profound questions and statements everyone should contemplate, regardless of the originator of the quote happens to be. Just because a quote didn't come from a famous author doesn't mean they are empty quotes.

If you read my older posts, this is not the first time I have brought up this discussion and it is a fairly common theme for me to discuss because lets be honest, most of the worlds problems, past and present, stem from people disagreeing because the other side prays to a different invisible man then they do.

And no, the closed religious mind, the fundamentalist mind is the one that is more closed and the most dangerous i.e. 9/11, Jonestown, etc...Acts that were committed in Gods name. The stuff about Stalin Dee refers to were not acts of Atheists for the cause of Atheism unlike the Crusades, 9/11, Armenian holocaust, Jonestown, Waco, etc.

I don't set out to disprove faith...Faith is very real, all too real and a huge scapegoat that is used every time logical evidence is presented to the closed minded religious zealot. I don't know how many conversations I have had with religious people who end the discussion with "You just don't have faith", or you just gotta have faith.

I have plenty of faith in things that have earned that faith. I have faith that the sun will go down at about 5:30 today and I have faith that it will return again at about 7am in the morning. There is empirical evidence there that has earned my faith. I have faith that when I go down to drive home today that my car will be there because I word in a relatively safe, crime free neighborhood and therefore get my keys in hand as I walk out the door. If I had no faith in that concept I wouldn't bother pulling my keys out before I could see my car. No one can disprove faith or disprove God (nor can they prove God and no, faith isn't proof) but you can disprove the written words of a faith and you can prove things such as gravity, the earth being round, it revolving around the sun, evolution, etc. All of which directly contradicts what is written in the Bible by a supposedly all knowing, all powerful god. And it if wasn't, and the Bible was written my man, then why worship man and his rules?

You act as if I am stepping on your toes, religion has been stepping on the secular's toes since the day man decided there was a one true God.

So again, I invite you to name more than 2 atrocities that were carried out in the name of Atheism and lets compare that list to the atrocities that were carried out in the name of the "one true god".

I find it funny that there is so much debate about this being a post on proving something . . . come on people, it is just quotes on atheism. Some people just enjoy hearing witty remarks about religion (as i do) and the last thing i would guess by looking at this page is that it was put here to prove anything! There are some nice little gems in the line up, i commend the thread of quotes for that, but its not like this page was meant to be a thesis against religion. Just a collection of quotes on atheism, for us to enjoy! and i did.

And they weren't even all quotes on atheism. The one from Wright being an example.
