Joe The Plumber

Here's the scoop on Joe the Plumber:

Although he isn't saying who he will vote for, he claims to be an admirer of McCain and did vote in the Republican Primary. Go figure.

Joe is currently not earning anything close to $250,000 per year and since he is below that, would actually be able to save more money to buy the business under Obama's tax plan.

He has no intentions of buying the business anytime soon.

He doesn't have a plumbers license.

He does clearly have a problem with taxes; he doesn't pay them. Lucas county court currently has tax leins against ol' Joe.

The business which consists of him and the owner, doesn't make anywhere near 250,000 in profits so they would benefit under Obama's plan.

A 3% (36%-39%) increase in taxes on $250,000 is $7500 per year, $625 per month, $31.25 per day or $3.90 per hour. No one was going to work for $3.90 per hour anyway so the argument that he wouldn't be able to hire new poeple is moot.

In fact, under Obama's plan, for every person you did hire you would receive a $3000 tax credit which then only comes out to be $2.34 per hour assuming you hired one person and was making over $250,000 per year in profit...in a one to two man plumbing business.

The United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters has endorsed Obama.

It all sounds very planted / Jeff Gannon to me...you know, without the gay prostitution web-site....as far as we know.

And will have no motivation to do so under the tax plan of The Marxist (Obama).

He has no intentions of buying the business anytime soon.

With The Marxist likely to be elected, I'd wait 4-8 years.

The business which consists of him and the owner, doesn't make anywhere near 250,000....

So I guess expansion is out of the question. How does this create jobs?

In fact, under [The Marxist]'s plan, for every person you did hire you would receive a $3000 tax credit which then only comes out to be $2.34 per hour...

Considering the cost of hiring a person at say, $10/hr is $14-15/hr by the time the government gets its hand in it. Again, how do you create jobs this way?

The United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters has endorsed Obama.

Good for them. Elect someone who will make union elections non-democratic. It means more money for the union apparatus.

But as The Marxist told Joe, in true Marxist fashion, it's about "spreading the wealth around" (in that ol' Marxist way of course).

So, if you were making $80000 per year and you could make $250,000 per year but would pay an extra $7500 in taxes, you would rather make 80k than have to pay an extra $7500 per year in taxes?

That makes no sense.

Let me ask you something. When you worked at dairy queen, dug ditches or what ever it is you did in your late teens that put you in a 0 tax liability bracket, did you say to yourself then that it would be stupid to get an education and make 50k per year because your tax liability would increase?

No? didn't think so.

I assume that a plumbing business, which started out with one guy, and has now been 2 guys for the last 6 years, probably wasn't going to add a workforce of 1500 in the next year or so. So, that business probably would have never created new jobs or apparently just jobs which paid $3.90 per hour.

If you are asking how to create jobs at a 39% tax rate ask Bill Clinton. Clinton created a record number of Jobs during his administration and I believe Bush, with a 36% tax rate, is on his way to creating a record job loss. The proof is in the pudding.

Toad, I'll freely admit that Joe's numbers aren't necessarily perfect. He's a plumber, not a wonk.

However, as I've been listening to this, I figgered something out. You guys are upset because Joe made your guy look bad. In presenting The Marxist with these numbers, The Marxist revealed his real strategery of wealth redistribution.

As for not expanding to cross into a higher tax bracket, I've seen it done. Sitting on billing, drawing out jobs, doing everything possible to NOT pay more taxes. And that was with the relatively mild taxes (thanks to the GOP) and good economy of the Clinton years.

The Marxist is absolutely insane if he thinks raising taxes on the job producers is going to expand the economy.

What's a wonk?

How did he make Obama look bad? Joe isn't a job producer, he doesn't make 250,000 and he isn't a licensed plumber and he doesn't have the money to buy the business and that business doesn't make over $250,000. Joe made Joe look bad.

Ill gladly pay taxes if my overall net goes up. I would gladly pay all the taxes Gates has to if I could make his type of money. If you want to be stubborn and make $5.50 all your life to avoid taxes be my guest, you are only hurting yourself.

Okay you pay those taxes if you want. But you might want to disabuse yourself of the notion that the richest of the rich will pay nearly as much as the majority of people in the "rich" category. There's a point at which legally avoiding taxes becomes easy. So it falls on plenty of those small business owners that The Marxist seems to what to help. I could go on, but that would mean another obligatory FairTax discussion.

Also, I stand corrected. Joe didn't make The Marxist look bad. The Marxist made himself look bad when, in answering Joe, uttered four words that may change the course of the election: "Spread the wealth around."

I haven't thought about Jeff Gannon in ages. Thanks for the fond memories.

patrick stated the obvious:

'Toad, I'll freely admit that Joe's numbers aren't necessarily perfect. He's a plumber, not a wonk.'

All the plumbers I've ever met know the difference between gross and adjusted gross income. Or gross revenue and adjusted net income in the case of buying a business.

But then it takes a special kind of chutzpah to make ones ignorance so conspicuous. And Joe has it in spades.

Obama approached "Joe" who was minding his own business. How was he "planted" ?
