Why I am a 9/11 Democrat

Ok, so technically I am a registered Independent but that's beside the point.

I was talking to this girl the other day who wasn't overly conservative but called herself a 9/11 Republican. I have heard Dennis Miller and others use this term before but I have always been somewhat confused by this statement. What does 9/11 Republican mean? How do the events of 9/11 make people want to turn Republican since it’s essentially the Republicans who allowed something like 9/11 to happen?

I also heard people after 9/11 saying: "thank God Bush was President and not Gore". Again, what would have Gore done that Bush didn't do other than not invade a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. Do you really think Gore would have turned over the eastern seaboard to Bin Laden and made everyone start praying towards Mecca five times a day? Do you really think he would have just let it all go and done nothing? Or, do you think maybe he would have put a massive amount of troops, whose pay and benefits he wouldn't have cut, into Afghanistan and actually capture Bin Laden, something Bush has yet to accomplish.

Here is why I am a 9/11 Democrat:

1: 9/11 happened on the Republicans watch. They had the warnings, they knew it was coming; they read children’s books and dressed up as cowboys on vacation.

2: The main reason the Arab world hates us is because of our lopsided financial and military support of Israel. Who are the biggest supporters of Zionist settlers and the funding of Israel? Conservative Republicans. George Bush even once advocated moving the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem which is claimed by the Palestinians as their capital and not recognized by the UN as the capital of Israel.

3. The other reason Bin Laden hates us is that we staged troops on Muslim Holy land in efforts to invade another Muslim country. Right or wrong, that was a Republican President who was responsible.

4. The Democrats, as mentioned before, would have never invaded a random country just because they had Muslims. They would have only gone after the real enemy and given the military enough troops and support to complete the mission.

5. We all know that in 2000 the oil and gas industry contributed 7 million dollars to Democratic candidates compared to 26.7 million (78%) that went towards Republican candidates. We also know that the oil extracted by these companies comes from the Middle East where Muslim Arabs live. We also know that the war in Iraq was motivated by corporate (mostly oil) profits who all have ties to this administration and other Republicans. We all know that before the Iraq war a barrel of oil was under $30 and that now it is at $72 a barrel. We know that because of Republican ties to the oil industry that the Republicans are indirectly responsible for the corruption in the Middle East as well as all the puppet regimes that have been set up there that exploit their people to serve our best interests. These actions create unrest in the Muslim world which incites violence and attacks against the US.

These are the reasons you should cock punch the next person who tells you they are a 9/11 Republican.

People that call themselves that don’t know what the hell they are talking about. Real wingnut Republicans use that term “9/11 Republican” to fool people into thinking that if you are not with them you’re with terror... and a common reply from a person like that would be: Why do you hate America?

Self proclaimed 9/11 Republicans = idiots^2

I have self-labeled myself as having a pre-9-11 mentality. Before 9-11, I knew there were people who hated the US. I knew they would give up their lives to kill us, even at the cost of their own lives. I knew that a man who doesn't care about his life can accomplish anything. Call me a pessimist, but when 9-11 happened, the first thought that went through my head was 'oh, it's finally happened.'

Then people started talking about how the 'World had changed' and acting like we should now get massively aggressive with our foreign policy (to everyone but Saudi Arabia) & sheepishly compliant when it came to civil rights. I saw people hoarding plastic and duct tape and wetting their pants thinking "the terrorists" could attack their town of 150 people. All the time, all I could think was, 'we are giving them exactly what they wanted, we are giving them exactly what they wanted, we are giving them exactly what they wanted". That's my pre 9-11 mentality

I agree that any other president would have reacted pretty much the same as Bush (in the beginning - not the Iraq thing), but I'm not so sure that a Democrat would have handled things any better. Clinton was in office when the "Black Hawk Down" fiasco in Somalia occurred. 9/11 didn't just materialize after Bush came into office, same as with our troops with our poorly supported troops. Both of those have roots in the Clinton administration. Besides, Democrats are known for having the organizational capability of cheese.

Bottom line - the American public got screwed in the last election. Not counting die-hards, I think most swing voters wanted Bush out of office, but didn't view Kerry as much of an improvement.

But to say terrorism had its roots in the Clinton era is false. Again, its the policies of the conservative wing in this county that have created a lot of this hostility towards the US. Should Clinton have done more after the African Embassy attacks? Of course, but would Republicans have just accused him of wagging the dog with a war?

Not all of us would have accused him of wagging the dog. Had Clinton actually tracked down the people behind the African Embassy attacks, and the USS Cole Attack, and if he had accepted it when a not so friendly country offered to hand over Osama Bin Laden, we wouldn't have had to worry about 9/11. The same thing can be said of the first Trade Tower attack. We should have gone after them then.

As usual, you and I will disagree with why the muslim's hate us. I don't think it has anything to do with being a democrat or republican. I think it has more to do with the way our country is sinking in a morase of iniquity. A deeply religious people, like the Muslim's are bothered by Gay rights, open demonstrations of Gay lifestyle, open pornography, open thievery. I think in their eyes, we have become the great satan.

However, if the way they live is the way they want us to live, I'll take our lifestyle over theirs. At least here, a woman can walk down the street sans burka, and not worry about being attacked if she goes to work.

Do we disagree again? Or can find some middle ground?

Actually the Cole attack happened at the end of Clintons term. Once they had all the info on that Bush had already been elected. Those files were turned over to the Bush administration and they threw them in the garbage over fears of getting their hands sticky I guess.

The gay marriage shit is just icing on top of the cake for them. Our support of israel and our tendencies to support dictators in their countries (such as Saddam and the Shaw) are the other main reasons they hate us. We are indeed arraogant assholes to the rest of the world.

How much press do you really think gay marriage gets in the middle east?

Great post! Nicely said.

I definitely agree with the last point. The US is really not trusted by the people of middle east because every time there was some movement toward democracy or for the benefit of the people (eg. the nationalization of oil industry in Iran), the US made sure to interfere (with a coup for example) and basically sent that country back 100 years. (imagine after the emancipation proclamation france attacking the white house and kicking the president out). so now it's kind of hard to convince those people that we go there for their own good! (liberation!)

oh yeah, and nobody cares about american gay marriage in the middle east (I'm not speculating, I have been there). all the things that joe weiss referred to as reasons they hate us is just what their government propaganda uses to induce hate. what it really comes down to though, is mistrust. and that's shared by the most democrat, most intellectual and least religious groups of people in the middle east (they do exist). and lets be honest, not the hatred, but the mistrust is 100% fair.
